One of the most known structures on earth is the Eiffel Tower.

It stands 1,063 feet tall. As of 2006, 200,000,000 people have visited the Eiffel Tower since it opened on May 6th 1889. It was built between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle. The tower was originally planned to be built in Barcelona but the city council didn’t agree because they thought it didn’t fit in with the rest of the city. Thus, after sending the draft to the person in charge of the universal exhibition in Paris, they decided to take on the project.

It took 300 workers, 18,038 pieces of puddled iron, and two and a half million rivets to construct the massive structure. Many people didn’t like the Eiffel tower though. They thought it was an “eyesore”. But now it is considered a striking piece of art.

When they first built it, they had a 20 year permit, which meant they would have to tear it down in 1909. They later discovered it was a good reception place for radios so they decided to leave it.
